WFMW Backwards Edition-Help!!!!!!!!!

Okay, maybe I'm not as desparate as that title sounds (hem, maybe), but I am looking for advice.

I'm trying to introduce my one-year-old son to the joys of the sippy cup. He thinks it's a great toy, but not useful for much else. The one I have is pretty basic: hard spout, removable valve. Because of the hard spout, he will not suck on it, so I have removed the valve. If I lean him back in my lap and hold the cup with him, he will drink, but he has no interest in using it on his own.

Any thoughts?

My son didn't like the hard spout ones until he was much older. I love the NUBY brand they don't have any of the bad plastic, if that is something you worry about, the entire top is soft, except for the ring that holds it. They have them everywhere, Babies R Us, Wally & Target. I hope this helps!!

To my surprise many children do well with the straw sippy cups as well.

We started my daugher with a sippy with a slit opening so it did spill but it helped her "get it" and then moved to the kind with the 3 holes in the top.

I don't like ones with the plastic valves b/c I've seen too many of them with things growing inside the small crevices.

I'm not sure the age of you son but I think my daugher was around 10 months when she got it. (only water at that time then milk at a year)

I'd also like to invite you to my blog on Wednesdays as I review a chapter a week of the book "The Power of a Praying Parent."

http://www.amazon.com/Luv-Care-Nuby-Handle-Sippy/dp/B000JOOGR0 these cups are the best. I am currently teaching the twins I nanny for to use their sippy cup. I have found that they do the best when they are hungry. I give them the first 2-3oz of their bottle in the cup and let them work on it. I also give them water in it after their meal. My best advice is give it to him when he is hungriest and try these cups.

One thing that has worked with my children is to fill the cup with water and leave it where they can get it. Let them play with it and become familiar with it. They'll get it.

We used the soft spout Playtex cups (the First Sipster) and also the Avent cups (Magic Trainer) with soft spouts (which we popped out and replaced with harder spouts when our daughter got older, and the same spouts fit in her Klean Kanteen). It took our daughter a while to "get it" too, so I cut a larger hole in one of the Playtex valves so it would drip a bit when she tipped it. I think that encouraged her to suck the milk out.
