Okay. I know that sounds completely obvious and uninspired, but it's more interesting than you think. When my family picked up last September and moved over 7300 miles from home, we had to limit what we could take with us pretty severely. Translation: almost no books. I brought exactly three little books for my son, all Beatrix Potter stories, and that was it.
My solution? I read to him classic fairy tales, fables, and Bible stories off of the Internet! Project Gutenberg is a great source, but you can also find websites that feature the Brothers Grimm (whenever possible, I use original texts, so please read ahead before sharing them with your children!), Hans Christian Andersen, Aesop, Arabian Nights (same caution applies as with Grimm), and Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories.
Since I studies Italian for a couple semesters in college, I've also taken the opportunity to brush up by reading to my son in Italian as well. We're currently reading some classic fairy tales, and I've also been working on an Italian translation of Alice in Wonderland. The Internet is a great source for kids' and adults' learning resources in languages other than English.
So that's how the Internet works for me!

These are great resources! They can work for adult books too. I just found a book on Project Gutenberg that my library system didn't have.
