My boy is tall. Skinny, but tall. Width-wise, he can easily fit the 9-month size (he's 14 months), but he is too long for the 12-month size. This means he outgrows onesies very quickly. Since I prefer to cloth diaper (old-fashioned flat folds), I also find onesies inconvenient. I'd rather put him in a shirt and soaker, and not have to change his entire outfit when he gets wet. So, recently, I hemmed his onesies and turned them into t-shirts. He will get so much more wear out of them this way!
It was very simple, and would have been much easier if I had access to a sewing machine or pins right now.
I cut straight across the onesie, through both layers of fabric at once immediately above the legs. This allows the greatest length for the shirt.
Sew around.
Not only has this little project increased the time my boy can wear his clothes before outgrowing them, but it's saved me money too. It's hard to find shirts for babies, and they are often more expensive than a basic onesie.
Better yet, the project kept me busy and amused for several hours, and I didn't spend a penny!
